Any of the below courses can be completed as interest short courses provided pre-requisites are met where applicable. This information also relates to your elective options for the Certificate, Diploma and Degree courses.

Massage Stage One (Intro to Massage) $195

Discover the power of touch. In one weekend you will learn all the basic strokes and sequences to give a full body massage to friends and family. You will also be introduced to principles of massage and important safety cautions. This course is a wonderful practical base for your further learning.

Massage Stage Two $225

Prerequisite: Massage Stage One

Sore shoulders, aching upper back and a neck tension? Learn to relax these areas specifically with long flowing strokes and deeper techniques. Many people hold tension in this pattern so this is a very common focus area in massage.

Refine your understanding of body mechanics to enhance the effectiveness of your massage. You will be introduced to assessing and consulting with clients and designing a massage to suit your client’s needs. Please allow four weeks to practice after Stage One.

Massage Stage Three $235

Prerequisite: Massage Stage Two
3 credits
15 hours*

Deep tissue relaxation techniques for the lower back and legs are the focus. Learn to identify muscles in this region, and to assess and apply techniques to ensure your client’s comfort and safety. You will also be introduced to connective tissue massage without oil.

After this course you will have covered the whole body and will be able to assess whether a potential client is within your scope of practice. A practical assessment of relaxation strokes on day two lets you benchmark your progress. Please allow four weeks to practice after Stage Two

Develop your skills further with side-lying techniques and a deeper understanding of quality of touch. Begin to explore polarity and energy techniques and learn the specific qualities of different massage strokes.

Learn about the relevant professional boundaries and the ethical and legal issues of massage practice. Integrate your learning so far with a client-focused full body relaxation massage. Please allow four weeks to practice after Stage Three.

Massage Stage Five $290

Prerequisite: Massage Stage Four

Review techniques from Stages One to Four and apply a new variety of massage strokes to specific muscles. Extend your repertoire in order to give a complete relaxation massage.

Explore the history, philosophical principles, cultural aspects, physical effects and psychological effects of massage. A one hour practical assessment provides feedback on planning a quality full relaxation session geared to your client. Please allow six weeks after Stage Four.

Anatomy & Physiology (Introduction) - $1195

No prerequisite/Includes Surface Anatomy
25 credits
250 hours*, (incl 15 hours weekend* plus final written exam)

This exciting course provides a great introductory overview of the workings of the human body. For the distance learning option, 6 modules including DVD support are sent monthly with a weekend at the College for practical surface anatomy teaching and assessment, and final day for the written exam.

The following systems are covered: Cells, Tissues and Integumentary, Muscular and Skeletal, Circulatory (Cardiovascular and Lymphatic), Nervous and Endocrine, Respiratory and Reproductive, Digestive and Urinary.

What would you do in a first aid emergency? Learn to manage the situation, provide resuscitation, and give first aid until help arrives. Learning first aid has never been so much fun with interactive and stimulating classes from independent contractor Action for Survival.

Covers NZQA unit standards 6400, 6401, 6402.

Applied Aromatherapy - $495

Aromatherapy uses fragrant oils extracted from plants. These potent products have been used throughout history for the promotion and maintenance of both physical and emotional well being. Combining two of our most powerful senses, smell and touch, aromatherapy massage has been associated with a wide range of clinical benefits for the recipient.

Essential oils may be applied via inhalations, compresses, and baths or incorporated into creams, lotions and waxes for an everyday whole-body experience. Aromatherapy can positively influence the body’s physiological and emotional states and is associated with enhancing tissue healing. Students on this course will be introduced to some of the versatile therapeutic uses of essential oils.

Holistic Pulsing $465

Learn the basic principles, philosophy and techniques of this gentle mind-body modality. Rhythmic wave-like rocking movements are applied to the client, clothed or draped, on a massage table or in a chair. Tension and blockages from imbalance, injury or trauma may correspond to changes in the flow of movement in the client’s body; pulsing stimulates all fluid systems allowing more freedom in the joints, muscles and organs. Benefits range from physical relaxation and healing to emotional healing & spiritual insight. Holistic Pulsing interweaves well with other modalities; it is a valuable addition to a therapist’s skill-base.

Massage Practice Management $270

So you want to run a massage practice, or maybe you plan to work in a clinic or go into partnership. How much should you charge? Which business structure is right for you? How do you communicate professionally and appropriately with clients? What about tax? Marketing? Business plans? What are your legal obligations? Your ethical responsibilities as a health care practitioner?

Learn the basics of what you need to know to start or run a successful massage business in New Zealand. You’ll have opportunities to develop professional communication skills and practice appropriate therapist-client interaction. You’ll do actual business planning and evaluate different business structures, and you’ll learn where to go to learn more.

Ortho-Bionomy $465

This gentle and non-invasive bodywork uses movement away from pain and positions of comfort to engage the body’s self-corrective reflexes. Ortho-Bionomy assists the management of acute and chronic pain, postural and structural imbalance and chronic muscle tension. Learn a variety of techniques including general release, and how to apply these effectively and safely in a clinic setting.

Polarity/Energy Balancing $465

Prerequisite: Massage Stage Three

32 hours* (9.00 am – 5.30 pm)

Discover ways to increase and balance energy flow through polarity therapy, chakra balancing, meridian flushing, meditation and creative visualisation. Learn to use vibratory release of holding patterns and application of energy in deep tissue massage to prevent re-spasm of muscles. Apply these techniques within a massage session or as a complete session in themselves.

Research acknowledges the vital importance of balanced energy/electric fields to the function of our bodies. Learn to counterbalance the influence of on-demand lifestyles with the heart-centred and client-focused practical application of energy techniques in a clinical massage setting. Practice gentle release techniques and self- and client-awareness. Explore cultural lenses on health and healing.

This course will lead you towards new levels of sensitivity in your bodywork.

Reflexology $465

Reflexology uses a combination of massage and pressure techniques on the feet. It is based on the principle that reflexes on the feet correspond to all parts of the body and pressure applied to feet assists the body to rebalance elsewhere. The essentials of foot and hand reflexology are studied. This includes zone therapy, foot anatomy and reflexing techniques.
